CARFAX is Not a Pre-purchase Inspection

CARFAX (and AutoCheck) are internet companies that originally sold title information on vehicles. However, these companies now claim to have accident information and mechanical information on these vehicles. However, CARFAX does not guarantee the "ACCURACY AND RELIABILITY OF ITS INFORMATION".

CARFAX has very good information on vehicle's title history. For example if a vehicle was titled from one state to another, CARFAX will have that information. However, if a vehicle has been totaled, CARFAX will only report this if the State branded the title "salvage or reconditioned". There are many totaled vehicles that never get a salvage title. There are also many illegal ways to change, alter, or clean a vehicle's documents and history.

As for accident and repair history, CARFAX admits it has very little accident and repair history. There is no central database for accident reports and repair history, and insurance companies do not share accident information with CARFAX.

There are  many lawsuits filed against CARFAX because it promotes that it has accident and repair history information. However, a vehicle title report or history report, can't tell if there are existing mechanical or electrical problems, or if the vehicle has been maintained or abused, and the extent of any damages or the quality of any repairs. There are many dishonest dealers and individuals that use a "clean" CARFAX report to  sell vehicles with previous accident damage, mechanical & electrical problems, odometer discrepancies, flood damage, frame damage, etc... Below are some of the problem associated with vehicle history reports:
